Turkiye's kumite gold share falls to 3.8% as its podium reach widens
KarateInsights Data Desk·October 13, 2026
The country wins about as many kumite golds as it did in 2019, but at events offering nearly three times as many.
Turkiye's share of kumite gold at the events it medals in fell to 3.8% in 2025 from 14.6% in 2019, though its annual gold count barely moved.
The country won 13 kumite golds in 2019 and nine in 2025, according to KarateInsights competition records. What changed was the field around it. The events where Turkiye reached a kumite podium rose to 14 from seven, and the golds contested at those events rose to 237 from 89.
That pattern holds across the period. Turkiye took 55 kumite golds between 2019 and 2026, never more than 13 in a year and never fewer than two. Its share peaked at 23.1% in 2022, a year it medalled at two events, and bottomed at 3.8% in 2025. The 14 events of 2025 were the most in any year covered.
The low point in gold terms came in 2023, when three events yielded two golds and a 5.9% share. Across the whole period Turkiye has taken 194 kumite medals; 55 of them, or 28%, were gold.
Eray Samdan of Turkiye accounts for 10 of those 55 golds, more than any other Turkish kumite competitor in the period, and close to a fifth of the national total. Samdan has medalled in every year from 2019 through 2026. Behind him, Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu of Turkiye and Ugur Aktas of Turkiye hold four golds each, and Omer Faruk Yurur of Turkiye has three.
2026 reads differently. Through eight events, Turkiye has taken eight kumite golds for a 6.8% share, its highest since 2022. The sample is partial; the year is not complete.
The share measured here is narrow by design. It counts only events where Turkiye reached a kumite podium, so it does not fall merely because the records cover more competitions. Measured against every processed event, the same 2025 figure reads 2.4%.
The figures cover 2019 through 2026. Earlier seasons carry between one and six processed events a year and are left out. Counts come from medal results, with a team medal counted once.
The next home test comes at the 2027 European Games in Istanbul, which opens June 16, 2027.
How we counted
Figures cover 2019 through 2026, the window in which KarateInsights processes between five and 22 events a year; earlier seasons carry one to six and are excluded. The share reported is Turkiye's kumite golds divided by all kumite golds awarded at the events where Turkiye reached a kumite podium, which keeps the measure from falling simply because the records cover more competitions. A team medal counts once, and medal counts come from recorded results rather than entry lists.
